Shortcut Keys & Tips
Logic Audio features hundreds of user-customizable key commands which you can set up to cater to the tasks/functions you use most in the program. These shortcut keys which can be assigned to your QWERTY keyboard accelerate the use of Logic massively and allow you to achieve your end results in the shortest possible time.
- For Windows users, a window called "Key Commands" is accessible from the Options/Settings menu. (Or you could use a shortcut to open it &emdash; ALT + SHIFT + K)
- Mac Users, you'll find the Key Commands window in the same place or via ALT + K.
This dialogue allows you to alter Logic Audio's default keyboard shortcuts to match those of your previous sequencer or to customize them to something that matches your tastes & sensibilities.
Follow these steps:
- Open your Key Commands and locate the command you're looking for (do a Search or simply scroll through the options)
- Press the Learn Key and select (any unused) key command. This can be a single key or a key combination (with SHIFT, ALT etc.)
- Press the Learn Key again to stop learning
- Close your Key Commands window

These key commands listed above, combined with screensets and any other key commands that you choose to set up will benefit you greatly. Take the time to learn & remember them, or alternately customize them to something that is more meaningful to you.
Controlling Windows &emdash; Screensets
Every song you create in Logic Audio can have up to 90 "screensets". Screensets are combinations of edit windows which can be customized by you and then stored to a specific numeric key/combination of keys on your computer keyboard.
Each screenset remembers the type of edit window/s opened plus size, position and zoom settings.
This facility accelerates your workflow massively and allows you to tailor Logic Audio to fit your needs and preferred method of working.
To set up a screenset:
- Press any of the numeric keys above your QWERTY keyboard (you can also use the numeric keypad)
- Open the required edit windows by selecting them from the Windows menu.
- Resize, zoom and reposition your selected windows to meet your needs
- Press the numeric key again.
N.B.- This will only work for keys/screensets 1-9.
Should you wish to set up more than nine screensets:
- Press the CTRL + numeric keys e.g. to set up screenset 75, you would press and hold CTRL and type in 75.
- To ensure that your screensets remain as you intended, you should always lock your screensets by pressing SHIFT + L on either Windows or MacOS.
- To recall your screenset/s simply press the appropriate key/s 1 thru 9 or ALT + two digits in LAW or CTRL + two digits in LAM.
Other Tricks and Tips
- Renaming a sequence object with an "@" at the beginning of the name will show it's contents....alternately use the "Show sequence contents" parameter from the Options menu in the Arrange window.
- The "Q" button can be found in most of the editing windows.....use of this button allows you to quantize individual notes or groups of notes within a particular sequence to different quantize values.
NB: Use of the quantize function in the Arrange Window will OVERRIDE any individual quantize changes made in the edit windows on a particular sequence object.....be careful !!!!
- The "running man" icon (found in the top left hand corner of all of your edit windows) updates your pages so that when the Song Position Line (SPL) which follows the music exits the current window....Logic automatically "jumps" to the next page and "follows" the SPL's progress. (With 'scroll in play' activated, the SPL remains centered in the Arrange/other editors)
- Clicking onto the track number in the tracklist and holding down the mouse button will display a two-headed arrow. This allows you to drag a track, and all of the sequence objects beside it, up or down in the track list.....particularly useful for rearranging a score layout.
- In the Sequence Parameters box, the transpose & delay functions have a couple of "zones" beside them where you can click your mouse. If you click to the extreme right of the box, you will be able to increment/decrement in steps....if you click the mouse in about a centimeter or two a flip menu of mathematical variables will show up, allowing you to select one, if appropriate to the task at hand.
- Double-clicking on ANY numerical value in any editor, on the transport bar etc. will allow you to directly type in a value.
N.B. - typing 3111 as a locator value is NOT the same as typing 3 SPACE 1 SPACE 1 SPACE 1. If you type the former, Logic will think you are trying to set a locator at bar three thousand, one hundred and eleven, not bar three, beat one, sub beat one etc. Experiment with the various windows/value entry fields and you'll figure out where you do & don't need to put the spaces in.......
- It's worth noting that you can actually use this direct numerical entry method for quantize, program changes, FX parameters etc. Just double-click in your various "parameter" windows and even on objects that don't appear to have a numerical possibility (like pan pots, faders a.s.o.) and you might find a "pot of gold" which will speed things up a LOT for you.
- Select an object and hold down the mouse button, then press ALT + SHIFT. This will allow you to move the object in clock ticks for ultra fine placement.
- Changing the value in the transport bar below the time signature (/4, /8, /16 etc.) will alter the display resolution in your editing windows allowing for finer increments when moving/placing objects.
- The buttons on your transport bar to the right of the S.M.P.T.E. position and left/right locator values will open the Marker window and transport you to that particular point in the song, respectively.......although key commands are a better choice for these functions.
